Mean escape depth
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007070
The average depth, measured normal to the surface, from which a specified kind of particle or radiation escapes a solid. For electrons it is a depth, not a path length, so it differs from the inelastic mean free path, because elastic scattering also determines which electrons reach the surface. At the kinetic energies used in Auger and photoelectron spectroscopy it amounts to a few nanometres or less.
