Elastic peak electron spectroscopy

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003619

A surface-sensitive technique in which an electron spectrometer measures the elastic peak, made up of electrons scattered quasi-elastically by a solid or liquid from an incident beam with an energy of a few hundred eV up to a few keV. Because the peak's intensity varies with what the surface layer is made of, the method supplements Auger electron spectroscopy and, where electronic information is wanted, reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy (REELS). Comparing measured and calculated peak intensities gives the inelastic mean free path of the electrons in that material.
