Binary elastic scattering peak

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001224

A distinct feature in an energy spectrum that corresponds to incident particles that have undergone a single, elastic collision with a specific type of atom in the sample. The energy of this peak is characteristic of the mass of the target atom and the incident particle's energy and scattering angle. This peak is used to identify elements present on a surface in ion scattering spectroscopy.
