Binary system
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012922
A system composed of exactly two distinct chemical components, which are substances whose concentrations can be independently varied. The components exist in one or more phases, such as a solid solute dissolved in a liquid solvent or a mixture of two miscible liquids. In contrast, unary systems have one component, while ternary and quaternary systems have three and four components, respectively.
