Component
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002328
A chemically independent constituent of a system whose concentration can be varied independently. The number of components is the minimum number of independent species necessary to define the composition of all phases of the system. For a system containing water and dissolved sodium chloride, the components are H₂O and NaCl, not the individual Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions, as their amounts are linked by electroneutrality.
