Reciprocal salt system
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010014
A system in which at least two kinds of cation and two kinds of anion are present together, for example Na+, K+, Cl- and Br- in water, so that the four salts NaCl, KBr, NaBr and KCl are related by exchange reactions. In such a system a pair of salts with no common ion reacts by exchanging ions to give the other pair. Because of electrical neutrality, a system of n ionic species has n components in water as the single solvent and n minus 1 components when molten.
