Special salt effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011085
An observation in solvolysis reactions where the addition of certain salts, particularly lithium perchlorate, causes an increase in the reaction rate that is greater than predicted by the normal salt effect. This phenomenon is attributed to the trapping of an intermediate ion pair by the added salt, preventing its return to the starting material. The effect is typically observed in reactions involving carbocation intermediates.
