Speciation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011086

The way a given element is divided among its distinct chemical forms in a sample or system, whether those forms differ in isotopic makeup, electronic or oxidation state, or in the complex or molecular structure that contains the element. The forms matter because behavior depends on them: inorganic arsenite, As(III), is far more toxic than arsenobetaine, the organic arsenic compound found in seafood.
