Apparent

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000742

A prefix used for a measured quantity in a system where the exact molecular composition or speciation is unknown or complex, such as in a biological fluid. An apparent equilibrium constant, for example, is calculated based on the total concentrations of reactants and products without considering their different ionic or protonated forms. The value of an apparent quantity is conditional upon the specific pH, ionic strength, and temperature of the measurement.
