Apoptosis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000741
A highly regulated process of programmed cell death that eliminates unwanted or damaged cells from multicellular organisms without inducing inflammation. The process involves a series of biochemical events leading to characteristic morphological changes, including cell shrinkage, membrane blebbing, and chromatin condensation. Ultimately, the cell breaks apart into small, membrane-bound apoptotic bodies that are cleared by phagocytic cells.
