Pyknosis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009691
A morphological change in the nucleus of a cell characterized by the irreversible condensation of chromatin into a dense, shrunken mass. This process is a hallmark of necrosis and apoptosis, indicating cellular degeneration and impending cell death. The pyknotic nucleus often appears as a small, dark, and uniformly stained structure under a microscope.
