Activation-induced cell death
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000180
A form of programmed cell death, or apoptosis, that is triggered in mature lymphocytes following their repeated stimulation through their antigen receptors. This process is a homeostatic mechanism that controls the size of the lymphocyte population after an immune response has resolved, eliminating effector cells. The Fas/FasL signaling pathway is a primary molecular mechanism responsible for initiating this type of apoptosis.
