Activator
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000181
A species that speeds up a reaction already promoted by a catalyst, without acting as the catalyst itself. It binds to a reactant or to the catalyst and raises the catalyst's effectiveness, for example by changing its shape or its electronic state. Kinetic methods of analysis exploit this effect: under fixed conditions the measured rate increase is proportional to the amount of activator present.
