Self-poisoning

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010711

The deactivation of a catalyst by one of the products of the reaction it catalyzes, or by a reactant that undergoes a side reaction to form an inhibiting species. This process reduces the catalyst's activity over time. An example is the deposition of carbonaceous residues on a catalyst surface during hydrocarbon reactions.
