Selective poisoning

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010679

The process by which a catalyst's activity is reduced or eliminated for specific reactions or reactants, while its activity for other reactions remains largely unaffected. This occurs when a poison preferentially adsorbs onto or reacts with particular active sites on the catalyst surface. It is a method used to control reaction pathways in heterogeneous catalysis.
