Temporary poisoning

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011863

A reversible reduction in the activity of a catalyst caused by a substance that adsorbs strongly to the active sites without undergoing a chemical transformation. Unlike permanent poisoning, the interaction between the poison and the catalyst surface is not irreversible. The original catalytic activity can be restored by removing the adsorbed poison, for instance by increasing the temperature or decreasing the partial pressure of the poisonous substance in the feed stream.
