Extrinsic pathway

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004312

The apoptotic pathway of cell death that starts when ligands such as Fas ligand or tumour necrosis factor alpha bind death receptors on the plasma membrane, leading to activation of caspase 8. In blood coagulation the same name is given to the cascade triggered by tissue factor released from damaged tissue, which rapidly generates thrombin. The apoptotic sense is the one used in toxicology, whereas the coagulation sense belongs to hematology.
