Intrinsic pathway
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006033
The mitochondrial route to apoptosis, triggered from inside the cell by stresses such as DNA damage, hypoxia, loss of survival factors, or a defective cell cycle. These signals shift the balance of Bcl-2 family proteins, so that mitochondria release cytochrome c, which assembles the apoptosome and activates caspase-9, in turn activating the executioner caspases 3 and 7. It contrasts with the extrinsic pathway, which starts at death receptors such as Fas and activates caspase-8.
