Extracellular matrix
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004279
A complex network of macromolecules, such as collagen, elastin, and glycoproteins, that is secreted by cells and fills the spaces between them in animal tissues. This non-cellular component provides physical scaffolding for the tissue architecture and initiates biochemical cues that regulate cell behavior, including adhesion, migration, and differentiation. The composition of the matrix varies significantly between different tissue types.
