Extracellular space
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004280
The total volume outside of the cells within a multicellular organism, encompassing all fluid compartments not contained within the cell membranes. This space includes interstitial fluid, plasma, and transcellular fluid, serving as a medium for nutrient transport, waste removal, and intercellular communication. Its composition and volume are tightly regulated to maintain cellular homeostasis.
