Caspase
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001693
A family of cysteine-dependent, aspartate-directed proteases that mediate programmed cell death (apoptosis) and inflammation. Caspases are synthesized as inactive zymogens called procaspases, which are then activated through proteolytic cleavage in response to specific cellular signals, often initiating a cascade. These enzymes are broadly classified into initiator caspases, such as caspase-8 and caspase-9, and executioner caspases, including caspase-3 and caspase-7, which carry out the dismantling of the cell.
