Extrinsic plasmon
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004313
A plasmon, a quantized collective oscillation of the valence electrons, that is excited by an electron as it travels through a condensed medium after being emitted. In photoelectron and Auger spectra, extrinsic plasmons produce energy-loss satellites on the low kinetic energy side of the main line, and their number follows a Poisson distribution that depends on the path length divided by the inelastic mean free path. Intrinsic plasmons are instead excited by the sudden creation of the core hole.
