Surface plasmon
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011656
A collective oscillation of free electrons at the interface between a metal and a dielectric material. These oscillations are quantized as surface plasmons and can be excited by incident light, leading to strong electromagnetic field enhancements at the surface. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a common technique for detecting molecular binding events.
