Intrinsic plasmon

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006035

A plasmon created simultaneously with, and at the same location as, the emission of a core-level photoelectron or Auger electron, because the sudden appearance of the core hole disturbs the electron gas of the solid. It shows up as a satellite loss peak on the low kinetic energy side of the main line in photoelectron and Auger spectra. It contrasts with an extrinsic plasmon, which the departing electron excites while travelling through the solid.
