Surface of tension

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011655

A dividing surface placed inside the interfacial layer between two fluids so that the layer is treated mechanically as a sheet under uniform tension, with its position fixed by how stress is distributed through the layer. For a curved interface it is the surface at which the Laplace equation links the pressure difference to the tension and the radius of curvature without a correction term. It differs from the equimolar Gibbs dividing surface.
