Surface excess amount

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011640

The excess of the amount of a component actually present in an interfacial system over the amount in a reference system of equal volume, in which the bulk concentrations stay uniform up to a Gibbs dividing surface. It can be positive or negative and depends on where the dividing surface is placed. It is an amount of substance in moles, and dividing by the interfacial area gives the surface excess concentration Γ in mol per square metre.
