Excess volume
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004165
The difference between the actual volume of a mixture and the sum of the volumes of its pure components before mixing, at the same temperature and pressure. A positive excess volume indicates expansion upon mixing, while a negative value indicates contraction. This quantity provides insight into the intermolecular interactions within a solution.
