Electrocapillarity
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003650
The study of the relationship between the interfacial tension at a metal-electrolyte boundary and the electric potential difference across that interface. The interfacial tension of a liquid metal electrode, such as mercury, changes as the applied potential is varied. This phenomenon is described by the Lippmann equation, which relates the change in surface tension to the surface charge density and the potential.
