Coagulation system
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002151
A cascade of enzymatic reactions involving plasma proteins, known as clotting factors, that results in the formation of a fibrin clot. This process, also called hemostasis, stops bleeding from a damaged blood vessel by converting the soluble protein fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin strands. The system is activated through either the intrinsic or extrinsic pathway, both of which converge on the activation of Factor X.
