Coagulative nucleation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002152

A particle-formation process in which nuclei produced by any mechanism, typically precursor particles from homogeneous nucleation in the aqueous phase, coagulate with one another until the larger particles are colloidally stable. Because the small precursors are unstable, each coagulation event lowers the particle count until stability is reached. It is invoked for emulsifier-free and low-surfactant emulsion polymerization, where this coagulation step largely fixes the final number of latex particles.
