Coal tar pitch
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002153
A viscous, black, amorphous residue obtained from the distillation of coal tar, which itself is a byproduct of coal carbonization. It is a complex mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic compounds. Coal tar pitch is widely used as a binder in the production of carbon electrodes, as a roofing material, and in road paving.
