Aromaticity
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000788
A property of cyclic, planar molecules with a delocalized pi-electron system that confers enhanced stability compared to their acyclic counterparts. This stabilization arises from the cyclic overlap of p-orbitals, leading to a closed shell of pi electrons. Hückel's rule states that a monocyclic planar system is aromatic if it possesses (4n + 2) pi electrons, where n is a non-negative integer.
