Antiaromaticity
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000661
A property of cyclic, planar, fully conjugated molecules that leads to a destabilization of the pi electron system. This destabilization arises from having 4n pi electrons, where n is an integer, in contrast to the stabilization seen in aromatic systems with 4n+2 pi electrons. Antiaromatic compounds exhibit higher energy and increased reactivity compared to their open-chain analogues.
