Antibiotic

A chemical substance produced by microorganisms or synthesized that inhibits the growth of or kills other microorganisms. These compounds are effective against bacteria, fungi, or protozoa, but are generally ineffective against viruses. Penicillin, discovered by Alexander Fleming, was one of the first widely used antibiotics.
