Fitness cost
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004454
A reduction in the reproductive success or survival rate of an organism that is associated with the expression of a particular trait, especially one that confers a benefit under different circumstances. This trade-off means that a beneficial adaptation in one context may be detrimental in another. For instance, antibiotic resistance in bacteria can incur a fitness cost in the absence of antibiotics.
