Trade-off
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012194
The exchange of one advantageous characteristic for another, so that gaining a benefit in one trait costs something in a second trait. In ecotoxicology a common example is a population that evolves tolerance to a chemical and pays for it with slower growth, lower reproduction or weaker competitive ability when the chemical is absent. Such costs are measured as a reduction in fitness components compared with non-tolerant individuals.
