Track detector
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012193
A device or material that records the passage of energetic charged particles by forming latent damage trails, which can then be made visible. These detectors, often made of plastics, glasses, or minerals, are used to measure particle fluence, energy, and direction. After irradiation, chemical etching reveals the tracks as microscopic holes or pits, which are then counted or analyzed.
