Fitness
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004453
The relative ability of an individual organism to survive and reproduce in a given environment, contributing its genes to the next generation. This measure reflects the success of an organism in passing on its heritable traits. In toxicology, reduced fitness indicates an adverse effect of a chemical on an organism's long-term viability and reproductive capacity.
