Fistula

An abnormal passage or connection that forms between two internal organs or between an organ and the exterior of the body. A fistula is not a normal anatomical structure and results from injury, infection, inflammation, or a congenital defect. For example, a tracheoesophageal fistula is an abnormal connection between the trachea and the esophagus, which can be a birth defect.
