Spawn

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013575

The act of releasing gametes, such as eggs or sperm, into an external environment, particularly by aquatic animals. This process is often synchronized among a population by environmental cues like water temperature, photoperiod, or lunar cycles to increase the probability of fertilization. In reproductive toxicology, the timing, volume, and viability of the spawn are measured as endpoints to assess the effects of chemical exposure on an organism's reproductive fitness.
