Spawning
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011083
The act of releasing eggs and sperm (gametes) by aquatic animals, referring to the process rather than the gametes themselves. This reproductive behavior is often synchronized with environmental cues like water temperature or lunar cycles to maximize fertilization success. In toxicological studies, exposure to certain chemicals can disrupt the hormonal signals that regulate spawning, leading to reproductive failure.
