Fluctuating asymmetry
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004507
Small, random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry in morphological traits that are otherwise symmetrical. These minor, non-directional differences between the left and right sides of an organism are thought to reflect an individual's inability to maintain precise development under environmental or genetic stress. High levels of fluctuating asymmetry can indicate developmental instability and reduced fitness in a population.
