Antisymmetry
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000715
A form of bilateral asymmetry in which individuals in a population differ markedly between their two sides, but the larger side is random, so the distribution of right minus left values is bimodal and centred on zero. It contrasts with fluctuating asymmetry, where the distribution has a single peak at zero, and with directional asymmetry, where one side is larger across the population. Fiddler crabs, whose enlarged claw is on the left in about half of males and on the right in the rest, are a classic example.
