Directional asymmetry
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003268
A pattern in a population in which one side of a bilaterally symmetrical trait is consistently larger than the other, so that the mean of the right-minus-left difference departs from zero. It differs from fluctuating asymmetry, where the differences are random about a mean of zero, and from antisymmetry, where the larger side varies between individuals, as in the major claw of fiddler crabs.
