Defensin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002917
A small, cysteine-rich cationic peptide produced by immune cells, such as neutrophils and macrophages, and by epithelial cells. These peptides exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses by disrupting microbial membranes. Defensins are a key component of the innate immune system, forming a first line of defense against pathogens.
