Macrophage
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006884
A large phagocytic cell, derived from blood monocytes or from embryonic precursors in some tissues, that engulfs and digests debris, dead cells, microbes and tumor cells. Macrophages also present antigen to T lymphocytes and release cytokines, linking innate and adaptive immunity. Tissue-resident forms include Kupffer cells in the liver, microglia in the brain and alveolar macrophages in the lung.
