Mononuclear phagocyte system
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007557
A network of phagocytic cells comprising blood monocytes, tissue macrophages and their precursors, found in connective tissue and most organs. Monocytes arise from bone marrow progenitors, whereas many resident macrophages, including microglia, are seeded before birth and renew themselves. Examples are Kupffer cells in the liver, alveolar macrophages in the lungs and microglia in the brain.
