Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006392

A specialized type of residential macrophage located within the sinusoids of the liver, forming part of the mononuclear phagocyte system. These cells are the first line of defense in the liver, responsible for clearing pathogens, cellular debris, endotoxins, and other foreign particulate matter from the portal blood supply. Kupffer cells also participate in iron metabolism and can initiate inflammatory responses to liver injury or infection.
