Residential macrophage
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010219
A macrophage that stays in a particular tissue, positioned where microbes or particles are likely to enter, as opposed to monocyte-derived cells recruited to sites of inflammation. Many are seeded from embryonic precursors and self-renew in adult life, although some tissues, such as the gut, are replenished by blood monocytes. Examples include Kupffer cells in the liver, microglia in the brain and alveolar macrophages in the lung, which clear debris and inhaled particles.
