Monooxygenase

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007558

An enzyme that incorporates one atom of molecular oxygen into a substrate, while the other oxygen atom is reduced to water. These enzymes are involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics and endogenous compounds, often increasing their polarity for excretion. Cytochrome P450 enzymes represent a major class of monooxygenases.
